Supreme Court Judge emerges emir of Lafia

Sidi Bage, a Justice of the Supreme Court, has emerged as the 17th Emir of Lafia, Nasarawa state.
He succeeded Mustapha Agwai I who died on January 10, 2019.
Haruna Osegba, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, announced the selection of the Emir on Tuesday in Lafia following the state traditional council meeting.
The commissioner said the new emir was selected by the emirate’s college of selector, ratified by the state traditional council and approved by the state governor, Umaru Al-Makura.
Osegba said the selection of the new emir was in line with legal Notice 12 of 1986, Section 31 stipulating the rotation of the stool between the two royal houses.
The commissioner explained further that Bage and Musa Mustapha-Agwai, son of the late emir contested for the position and Bage was selected by four out of the five members of the college of selectors.
Born on June 22, 1956, in Lafia, the new emir attended the Dunoma Primary School, Lafia, from 1963 to 1969 and Government Secondary School, Lafia, from 1970 to 1974.
He later proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, for a Diploma Programme in Law between 1975 to 1977 and later got his LLB degree in 1980
Upon graduation, he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School Lagos in 1980 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.
He started his journey into the Nigerian judiciary as a Legal Officer, Ground Training Group, Nigerian Air Force Base, Kaduna during the one year mandatoryNational Youth Service Corp (NYSC) from 1981 to 1982
He was appointed Magistrate Grade II Plateau State Judiciary in 1982 and in 1984, he was promoted Magistrate Grade I.
In 1986, he was promoted Senior Magistrate Grade II.
He later appointed Chief Magistrate II in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Judiciary in 1989 and in 1990, he was promoted Chief Magistrate I. In 1991, he promoted Deputy Chief Registrar FCT Judiciary.
In 1992, Bage was promoted substantive Chief Registrar, FCT High Court and was later elevated to the High Court Bench as a Judge in 1992. He was elevated Justice, Court of Appeal December 10, 2007, and Appointed Justice of the Supreme Court on December 5, 2016.
