Despite vehement resistance to cattle ranches in Plateau state, the state governor, Simon Lalong, has budgeted N250 million “for the establishment and management of ranches” in the state.
Permanent secretary, ministry of finance, Alhaji Sani Yahaya, who disclosed this on Thursday in Jos, during a breakdown of the 2018 budget of N146.4 billion, said the agriculture sub-sector is given a boost in the budget, with an allocation of N4.1 billion.
He said “N250 million was earmarked for the establishment and
management of ranches.”
Lalong had earlier debunked statements credited to him in the media to the effect that his administration was considering the establishment of grazing reserves in the state.
“Governor Simon Bako Lalong has and does not contemplate such action (cattle ranches and colonies) and he further calls on all good citizens of Plateau to bury such imagination of these elements, who are bent on throwing the State into confusion.
“Cattle colonies are not in the imagination of Governor Lalong”, Special Adviser to the governor, Dan Manjang, had said in a statement while denying media reports that the governor was planning to establish cattle ranches.
Prominent people in the state, including, Lalong’s predecessor, Senator Jonah David Jang, had cautioned the governor against using government’s resources to establish ranches, saying cattle rearing is a private business like many other businesses and should not be sponsored by government for any reason.
“Ranches is a private business and that individuals should cough out money and purchase land from the locals to run their business”Jang had said while condemning the idea.
The permanent secretary, however, said the Lalong’s administration would continue to maintain its stand on dealing decisively with any citizen both in public and private sector that try to frustrate efforts of revenue authorities.
He said this year’s budget would be well implemented as the budget has been approved in good time, and “we shall explore all necessary avenues to source for funds to finance it.”
